Second year of Idaho State Parks Foster Family Passport Program brings out more families at Fostering Family Adventures Event

Monday May 5, 2025

Bruneau Dunes State Park: Foster Families used their new Foster Family State Park Passports to attend Fostering Family Adventures: Bruneau Dunes State Park.

The event was held Saturday, May 3, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Activities included a scavenger hunt, learning outdoor skills, and the opportunity to become an Idaho State Park Junior Ranger. Plus, this year’s Foster Family Passport Kickoff Adventure included science-based experiences with a planetarium show at the Bruneau Dunes State Park Observatory.

Along with the 150 children and foster parents, roughly 100 volunteers and partners attended the event, provided items for gift bags, raffle prizes, and support for the foster family community. The continued success of the program brings plans for other Fostering Family Adventures at select Idaho State Parks this summer.

About the Program:
The Idaho State Park Foster Family Passport program provides a park pass at no cost for foster families for all Idaho state parks, as well as special Fostering Family Adventures events. This is the second year that the Department of Health and Welfare (DHW) and the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation (IDPR) have joined forces with Regence BlueShield of Idaho and Idaho Business for the Outdoors (IBO) to cover the cost of state park passports for foster families.

The program, which includes Fostering Family Adventures that go along with the passports, would not be possible without this year’s new sponsors: Capital City Kiwanis Club - Charles Schwab Boise Branch, Idaho Botanical Garden, Micron, and the Idaho Department of Fish and Game.

“Providing Idaho families and children access to Idaho State Parks is an important part of our mission,” said IDPR Director Susan Buxton. “We want to thank the sponsors, all the volunteers, and especially the foster families that joined us. We are here to preserve your Idaho outdoor home.”

“We’re thrilled to help offer a day where Idaho’s foster families can relax, connect, and enjoy something special as a family,” said DHW Family and Community Partnerships Administrator Laura Denner. “Events like this are a small way we can say thank you—and help families thrive.”
