First Day Hikes 2020

Each year, over 730 million people visit America’s State Parks and contribute over $23 billion to the economy. State Parks are a “close to home” resource and an important part of our country’s fabric, enhancing our quality of life.

Help us celebrate the our mission to improve the quality of life in Idaho through outdoor recreation and resource stewardship by participating in a First Day Hike on January 1, 2020!

Various events will be held across the state 

Event Listings:

- Harriman State Park: (Island Park, Idaho)
Celebrate 2020 with an evening on the trails. Bring your skis, snowshoes, friends and family to join a ranger for a 3 mile (round trip) winter trek. A warm fire and hot cocoa will be waiting for you at the Becker Warming Yurt as you look at the stars. Meet @ the historic Jones House. Please call to reserve your spot @ 208.558.7368. - Eagle Island State Park: (Eagle, Idaho)
Join us Wednesday January 1, 2020 from 1 pm - 3 pm. Warm up before, after, or during your walk around the park trails with some tasty hot cocoa and delicious potato soup.

Featuring Dr. Paul Collins! Get your steps in with a surgeon. He'll be available to answer medical questions and speak about the benefits of walking.



- Hells Gate State Park: (Lewiston, Idaho)
Time of the Event: 10 am - 1 pm
Where to Meet: Lewis Clark Discovery Center
Minimum Age for Kids: None
Restrictions: Leashed pets are welcome
Length of the Trail: 4.5 miles
Things to Bring: $5 entry fee per vehicle, comfortable walking shoes, leash for dogs, and water bottles.

Details: We have one guided hike planed and the first group will head out at 1pm. The guided Hike is not mandatory, Hikers are more than welcome to explore any of our 12 plus miles of trails. Upon completion of your hike there will be free Chili and hot cocoa, coffee at the Lewis and Clark Discovery Center.



- Three Island Crossing State Park (Glenns Ferry, Idaho):
11 am
Meet at the Oregon Trail History Center. Take a 1.82 mile Nature Learning & Historical Trek thru and around the park. This is an easy hike for all ages and your leashed pets are welcome! Wear warm clothes and shoes. This is a great way to start the New Year!

- Bruneau Dunes State Park (Bruneau, Idaho)
10 am
Start 2020 with a First Day Hike! We will meet at the Big Dune picnic area, at end of the park road, and climb to the top of the tallest dune. It will take approximately an hour (round trip) and is moderately strenuous. Dress warmly and bring water.

How many people can say they've climbed a sand dune with a Park Ranger? Impress your friends, family and co-workers!
