Motorbike and ATV Registration Requirements

On or before January 1 of each year, the owner of any all terrain vehicle (ATV) or motorbike used off public highways must register that vehicle with the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation (IDPR). Motorbikes and ATVs used exclusively on private agricultural land are excluded. The department or its authorized vendors will issue to the owner a validation sticker and a registration stating the number assigned to the ATV or motorbike and the name and the address of the owner. The registration fee is $10.00. All stickers which are issued throughout the year are valid through the end of the calendar year. I.C. 67-7101

For highway operation, motorbikes and ATVs must register as a motor vehicle and purchase a license plate. For more information contact your county Department of Motorized vehicles. I.C. 49-402

Nonresident registration requirements

It is not necessary for nonresidents to purchase a motorbike sticker unless they operate more than 30 consecutive days in Idaho. I.C. 67-7124

What is the motorbike recreation account?

Seven dollars and twenty three cents ($7.23) of the $10.00 fee collected from the sale of an ATV or motorbike registration sticker is deposited into the motorbike recreation account. The money from this account can be used as follows:

  • For the securing of special leases or permits, or the actual purchase of land under private, state or federal ownership to be used for recreational off highway vehicle activity;
  • For the securing, maintenance, construction or development of trails and other facilities for ATV or motorbike use on state and federal lands;
  • To finance the formulation and implementation of an off the road rider education program;
  • To acquire applicable federal matching funds.

The motorbike recreation account is also used to fund the IDPR Trail Ranger Program. This program hires crews mounted on motorcycles to maintain trails open to off highway motorcycles or ATV's throughout Idaho.

Where Should I Place my Sticker on my Motorbike or ATV?

The issued sticker shall be placed upon the ATV or motorbike in such a manner that it is completely visible and shall be kept in a legible condition at all times. .

At the time of sale from any dealer, each ATV or motorbike must be registered before it leaves the premises.

The purchaser of an ATV or motorbike, which has been previously registered, must transfer the registration within 15 days of the sale. The IDPR or its vendors will prepare a new registration with the name and the address of the new owner. The transfer fee is $3.00. An application for Idaho title must be filed at the nearest county assessor's office.

Sound and spark arrester requirements

Idaho law requires that no person may operate an ATV or motorbike that exceeds 96 decibels at the ½ meter test. I.C. 67-7125

All ATVs and motorbikes operated on public land are required to have a Forest Service approved spark arrester.

Hunting requirements for motorbike/ATV users

It Is Unlawful:

  • To hunt game from any motorized vehicle, EXCEPT for holders of a valid handicapped persons Motor Vehicle Permit.
  • To operate a vehicle in an area designated as closed for that specific vehicle type.
  • To use any motorized vehicle to harass, stir up, rally or drive in any manner any of the game animals or game birds.

State & Federal agencies along with private landowners establish road closures to maintain deer and elk numbers and distribution. Please check with the Forest Service, or Bureau of Land Management offices for information on vehicle restrictions.
