Marine Law Enforcement Resources

The department trains sheriffs' deputies and others responsible for patrolling Idaho's waterways in the technical details of boating laws, the procedures for enforcing those laws and the basics of operating patrol boats.

The Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation annually sponsors a combined 40-hour basic course and a 40-hour advanced course over an 8-day period, for a total of 80 hours of training. Both are POST-certified. The department also provides abbreviated courses which can be taught on-site at a county's request. In addition, IDPR can facilitate approval for marine deputies to attend specialized boating law enforcement courses offered throughout the country. These include the Coast Guard Marine Patrol Officer Course and the National Association of Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) Level 1 and Level 2 trainings.

2010 Marine Officer River Navigation and Techniques

Date:
  May 18-20, 2010
Time: 0800-1700
Locations:  Morning of 13th at Lewiston Red Lion Hotel / Remainder of class on the Clearwater and Snake Rivers near Orofino and Lewiston, ID
Overnight Accomodations:  Red Lion Hotel; 621 21st Street; Lewiston, ID

Training Description:  Idaho Parks and Recreation has been working with a number of Idaho Marine Deputies, Instructors and Supervisors to develop a course on river running, reading and operations for Marine Law Enforcement Officers – i.e. Marine Deputies, Fish and Game Officers, and Forest Service Law Enforcement Officers. The need for a course covering these important issues has been discussed for a number of years in Idaho. The goal is to have the course curriculum completed and approved by POST for 2009. The 3 day 30 hour course will be taught in mid-May on the Clearwater and Snake Rivers near Lewiston. The course will consist of 5 hours of classroom instruction, with the balance of the course being taught on the water. The location and time of the year were selected for the different types of water and conditions needed for the course.

The primary objective of this course is to expose Marine Deputies to a variety of moving water-related issues that they are likely to encounter while conducting Marine Patrol, or assisting with Search and Rescue related operations on the many rivers in Idaho. Marine Patrol is inherently dangerous; but when done on moving water the risks are greatly magnified. Once the students have completed the course, they should have a better understanding of the many hazards that exist while conducting these necessary missions. They should also have a better understanding on how to read, navigate, and manage these hazards. Furthermore, they should have a better understanding of their personal limitations and the limitations of the equipment they are using.

Required Equipment: Appropriate coldwater gear. Dry Suit or Wet Suit, gloves and boots are required. (Limited number of Dry Suits available for loan, Call for availability).

Class size limited to 8 students / Register Early!!

Classroom materials and some catered lunches provided.
