Marine Law Enforcement Resources
The department trains sheriffs' deputies and others responsible for patrolling Idaho's waterways in the technical details of boating laws, the procedures for enforcing those laws and the basics of operating patrol boats.
The Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation annually sponsors a combined 40-hour basic course and a 40-hour advanced course over an 8-day period, for a total of 80 hours of training. Both are POST-certified. The department also provides abbreviated courses which can be taught on-site at a county's request. In addition, IDPR can facilitate approval for marine deputies to attend specialized boating law enforcement courses offered throughout the country. These include the Coast Guard Marine Patrol Officer Course and the National Association of Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) Level 1 and Level 2 boat accident investigation courses.
