Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF)

In 1965, the United States Congress passed legislation that was to become one of our nation's most important conservation initiatives: The Land & Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) Act. The Act clearly outlined a course of action to, 1) meet the need for increased outdoor recreation opportunities in the nation, 2) share in a federal-state-local responsibility to finance land acquisition/development projects, and 3) emphasize the need to provide for these needs in and around areas close to home.

LWCF is funded primarily from a portion of the receipts from Outer Continental Shelf oil leases.
