Dworshak State Park is located among trees and meadows on the western shore of Dworshak Reservoir. The park is comprised of three units - Freeman Creek, Three Meadows Group Camp, and Big Eddy Lodge and Marina.
Camping, boating, fishing, swimming, hiking and water-skiing are just some of the many activities that await park visitors. A boat ramp and handling dock provide easy launching most of the year. A fish-cleaning station is nearby to help with the day’s catch.
The Park Today
Fall 2009
Need a break from the hustle of urban activity? Our colors are alive and the park has a quietness that mirrors a backcountry experience! If you’re looking for this kind of solitude, right now is the time to visit.
Currently our understory is in full display and our legions of Western Larch are on the brink of shifting to their golden standard that paints the hillsides this time of year. Come and see our palette of reds, oranges, and yellows while sitting by a warm fire enjoying the crisp fall air.
In addition, the critters are foraging ever closer to our campsites. You’ll likely hear the deep hoot of an owl or a chorus of coyotes that cry out nearby this time of year. If you’re lucky, you may witness a black bear feasting on the ripe harvest of apples that surround the camping areas that were once homesteads.
It’s also a great time to enjoy a mountain bike ride or cool hike out to our Three Meadows Group Camp and back (7 miles round trip); launch a boat to access numerous hunting areas outside the park on our 54 mile long reservoir; launch a canoe for a quiet paddle in the lakes numerous coves, or take on all or part of the Big Eddy Trail that leads out of our upper boat launch parking area at Freeman Creek (20 miles round trip).
As for camping, we have plenty of options available now that we’re in our walk-in season that is available year-round with winter rates that are reduced (see entrance station for information upon arrival). Although we’ve closed our showerhouse and potable water is no longer available (be sure to bring plenty), you can still hook an RV up to electric or pitch a tent in a variety of over 30 sites that are available. Vault toilets are available and we sell bundles of wood for your convenience.
In addition, our cabins are available to reserve year-round and our boat launch remains open as well -although it’s wise to call ahead (especially in Spring) to ensure water levels have not been dropped below the ramp.
So take a break, you deserve it! Come see us know before the roads take on winter’s challenges and see what a few days of solitude can do for your soul.
We will be changing our reservation to walkins only on September 10th 2009 and we recommend that you call (208)476-3132 or(208)476-5994 for current updates on winterizing our water shut down. (set for the end of Oct.)
*The deer are busy nibbling up the apples falling down on the ground from apple trees that are left from old home steads in our park.
*Remember fall is a great time to come and stay in one of our four cabins that are available year-round.
Freeman Creek has 105 campsites, three group loops, four camping cabins and a large picnic shelter. Showers, restrooms, boat ramp, archery range, and hiking trails are available for visitors. Camping, boating, fishing, hiking, waterskiing and archery range are just some of the many activities that await park visitors. Large group facilities make Dworshak the perfect spot for gatherings with friends and family.
Three Meadows Group Camp is great for overnight group functions. It offers a spacious lodge with kitchen facilities, and eight bunk-style group cabins, with an additional cabin that sleeps four.
Big Eddy Lodge is available to rent for activities such as weddings, family reunions, and other similar group functions. Big Eddy Marina is the only marina and fueling station on the Dworshak Reservoir and has 101 boat slips. Ice and other items are also available.
